A San Anselmo residence pushes the boundaries of scale — 20-foot sliding glass panels, a hillside that fought back, and the installation choreography that made it work.

There is a point in any ambitious project where the spec sheet stops being theoretical. For a luxury residence in San Anselmo, California, that moment arrived when three 20-foot sliding glass panels, each weighing 1,200 pounds, needed to clear a hillside, navigate a rain-saturated site, and land with surgical precision inside a rough-framed opening that left almost no margin for error.


The panels themselves were already exceptional. The Sosoares OS multi-slide system specified for this project pushed well beyond the 12-foot height limitation that constrains most door systems, rising 20 feet tall and spanning 14 feet wide across three panels, with motorized automation managing the full 2,400-pound load. At those proportions, the engineering challenge isn't just moving glass. It's controlling it.

Mud, Hills, and 20-Foot Panels

The site had other plans. Recent rain had saturated the hillside access, making ground-level deployment of the glazing robot impossible. The staging area was tight, the terrain steep, and the panels — at 5 feet wide and 20 feet tall — had no conventional path from delivery trailer to installation opening.

The solution was vertical. Each panel was lifted directly from the trailer using the glass lifting robot, then transferred to a crane that carried it over the house structure entirely. A four-person crew on interior scaffolding received each panel from above, guiding it into position from inside the building.


Three panels. Three lifts. Each one a coordinated handoff between ground equipment, crane, and interior crew.


What could have halted a conventional installation became a demonstration of what multi-machine coordination and experienced crews can accomplish when the site refuses to cooperate.




The Stability Problem Nobody Talks About

Scale introduces problems that standard specifications don't anticipate. Three panels at 1,200 pounds each — two automated, one fixed — at 20 feet tall, the height-to-width ratio creates a cartwheeling risk during movement if alignment and motor calibration aren't precise.


Getting it right required expert calibration on-site, not just correct installation. The two automated panels needed to move smoothly, quietly, and without lateral deviation, every time.


The finished result gives no indication of any of this. The two panels glide in unison, sliding over the fixed third to open the interior completely to the garden beyond.
