Standard corner configurations still compromise the vision. A structural post remains, interrupting sightlines and limiting the sense of true openness. Postless corner systems eliminate that final obstruction. Two perpendicular runs of glass meet at a 90-degree angle with nothing between them. No post. No pillar. No visual interruption.

Lateral loads transfer to reinforced side jambs. Vertical loads distribute through the building's structural frame. Glass panels slide past each other at the corner junction, or one panel stacks completely away, leaving nothing but open air where walls traditionally met.

The technical complexity remains hidden. What occupants experience is effortless operation and unobstructed openness.

Automation becomes essential rather than optional for most postless installations. When multiple heavy panels must move in coordinated sequence to prevent collision at corners, manual operation proves impractical.
Motorized systems manage the precise sequencing for active and passive door pairs, ensuring panels open in the correct order.
02 - IN PRACTICE
Two Projects, Two Climates
The Martis Camp installation in Truckee demonstrates postless corner engineering in extreme conditions. The 32-linear-foot corner system faces severe temperature swings, significant snow loads, and demanding aesthetic expectations. Custom steel header beams support triple-glazed panels while maintaining manufacturer deflection specifications under snow load conditions at 6,000+ foot elevation.

When open, the living space connects directly to mountain terraces without visual interruption despite the challenging climate.

The Point Grey project addresses a key challenge in postless corner design: structural deflection. Without a support post, the header experiences significant movement under load. The engineering team installed a deflection beam with slip joints, allowing up to 6 inches of deflection without impacting door operation. This approach maintains the seamless corner aesthetic while accommodating the structural realities of large-span systems.
The material palette affects the design expression significantly. Aluminum framing provides the slimmest profiles - up to 30% narrower than wood-clad equivalents while supporting equivalent glass weight. Steel systems achieve profiles as narrow as 1-1.5 inches, creating an almost frameless appearance where glass seems to float at the corner junction.
Postless corners expand what becomes designable. Floor-to-ceiling glass on constrained urban sites where traditional methods prove impossible. Residential projects where capturing views in multiple directions matters as much as the interior program.
